Arcade Fire - Neon Bible

Arcade Fire has overwhelming success with their debut album, ‘Funeral’, to the point that even I, a huge fan of the band, would think it was almost getting out of hand. This left high expectations on the band, and a lot of pressure for this album. Released on March 6th, the album reached high chart positions across all major countries, but off the back of their previous album, this would have happened had the band just recorded an hour an a half of white noise. Not to say that the album doesn’t have its merits, because it’s certainly a disc worthy of any cd collection.
Arcade Fire have such a distinctive sound, a great quality to have in these days when unoriginal musical fodder too often graces our airwaves. With seven different band members playing an array of instruments, we see the band’s undeniable musical prowess on display yet again on this album. A pipe organ gives the fourth track, ‘Intervention’ and absolutely huge sound.
There are big differences however, between Neon Bible and its predecessor. The album is not as lively as Funeral, a sign of the band’s development certainly, as they seem far more disciplined on this album. For this reviewer though, this has been negative development, as I just found it too laid back at times.
Lyrically, Funeral focused on personal aspects of life, whereas this album takes on a much larger view. Husband and wife duo Win Butler and Régine Chassagne sing about worldly issues, such as the war, and their views on the effect of television today. One could also assume that the tsunami disaster from 2004 is referred to in ‘Black Waves/Bad Vibrations’ – “There’s a great black wave in the middle of the sea/For me/For you”.

Surprisingly, the second from last track on the album is re-do of a song from their first EP. ‘No Cars Go’ is probably the best song on the entire album in fact. It’s some of the trademark, fast-paced Arcade Fire that we expected much more of after Funeral. Too often on this album, we’re waiting for a song to kick in and really get going, and too often this desire is left unfulfilled.

The title track, ‘Neon Bible” is a short, slow song, but with a nice little riff, and I feel it deserves to be the album title. Other noteworthy tracks include ‘Keep the Car Running’ and “My Body is a Cage” as a rather intense closing track. The album is certainly a good one, but doesn’t have as many standout tracks as Funeral, and is perhaps at times, a little too mellow.
Overall, I’d give it 8 stars out of ten, I’ve come to expect music of the highest quality from this band, and I must admit they didn’t disappoint me. Good to see them take a risk and not just produce Funeral version two.
8/10.

Muse - Black Holes and Revelations

Most CDs these days revolve around one or two singles and are jumbled together without the slightest thought or concern given to transitions. Fortunately, this is not the case with Black Holes and Revelations, as Muse delivers an album that contains eleven very good songs that are just the right amount different yet similar to each other.

The best example of this phenomenon can be seen from the very first two tracks. The first song, “Take a Bow” showcases the excellent instrumentals of the group as meaningless vocals are drowned out by addictive riffs in place of a chorus. Meanwhile, “Starlight” brings the emphasis back to Matthew Bellamy as his powerful voice sells an upbeat track seemingly out of place.

And the trend just continues. “Supermassive Black Hole” employs electronic beats surrounded by Bellamy singing into a voice-box to create an absolutely addictive tune. “Map of the Problematique” works solely because of the stellar drum work and “Assassin” is straight classic-Muse.

The most noteworthy song on the CD is the last one. “Knights of Cydonia” is a pure fun listen and it is clear from the accompanying music video that the band had fun recording it as well. The first minute is full of odd sounds and sound effects harnessed by a powerful melody that is sure to resonate in minds far after the five minute song finishes.

If this review could contain in-depth coverage of every track on this CD, it would. But for now, just take a hour or so of your time and pop this CD in and listen from start to finish. Every song succeeds on its own in it’s own unique way.

It’s hard to describe just how much of an accomplishment this album really is. Every song seems as if it could be playing on the radio tomorrow and four singles have already been picked up; “Starlight,” “Knights of Cydonia,” “Supermassive Black Hole,” and “Invincible.” This is one of the best, if not the best, rock album of 2006 and it is a shame if there are any fans of the genre out there without Black Holes and Revelations in their collection.

Amber Pacific

Amber Pacific, what used to be a small local band, who couldn’t get a gig for their life, has now exploded, and is booked as ever.

Their new album, Truth in Sincerity, was a great hit, and landed the band on the front page of Myspace for a week, because of how amazing it was.

I’m a true fan of Amber Pacific, I’ve been to two of their concerts, which have played in my town, and I’ve got all of their CD’s,(Truth in Sincerity being their third official CD.)
The new album came out May 22nd, and of course, I reordered it sometime near May 1st, and my CD came in the mail on the 23rd, and boy was I amazed.. Up until around May 20th, they only had ’sample’ songs on their myspace, to tease us fans on how good the album was, but just a few days before arrival they released the entire CD, so we could truly hear how great the CD was, and boy oh boy was it!

Their music is a lot like their last CD, in the fact that you can tell they focus on crazy guitar riffs, and awesome percussion throughout the entire song… Their new album is twelve songs, with their first song being a mighty nice prelude.
They have also joined the bandwagon, and done what a lot of other artist’s are doing with their songs, if you can tell one song leads RIGHT into the next song, almost perfectly, like a lot of other bands do (Senses Fail, Saosin, A change of pace) and it just makes the entire thing flow smoother and better, you may not be even able to tell the song has changed (Like in this case the prelude’s last drum beat is exactly what it is on the second song, so it sounds so perfect…) All in all, I was so enthusiast and geared up for the CD release, and I am so glad I got this CD, it is an amazing new album, from an amazing band.

I strongly recommend if you don’t listen to them, to check them out at either www.myspace.com/AmberPacific , or www.purevolume.com/AmberPacific they have amazing music, and I would encourage you to listen to them, it will be worth it!

Linkin Park - Minutes to midnight

Linkin Park - Minutes to Midnight

Being over four years since their last full studio album, Linkin Park had high expectations weighing on their shoulders. Surely if fans had waited this long there’d be something worthwhile at the end. Well, not really.
We can see the band are trying to take a new musical route, which, though admirable, doesn’t work all that well, and may even turn off some of the original hardcore fans.
The album opens with a nice ambient sounding intro, which kicks in for a heavy 30 seconds, kept short and sweet, preparing us for the further eleven tracks on the disc.

“Given Up” follows, a song that will keep the headbangers happy, some trademark Linkin Park. A heavy bass line accompanies a good vocal performance that unfortunately is undermined by the lyrics. Chester’s screams to “Put me out of my misery” make us think there’s a little jumping onto the whole emo bandwagon, but let’s refrain from going there shall we? But Chester, do stop the repetition of that line, end our misery.
Next up is “Leave Out All the Rest”, which is the first shock of the album, where we see the band making a failed attempt at changing their image to a more commercial one. We can’t blame the band for trying to appeal to a wider fan base, but sadly they don’t pull it off too well. There just seems to be a touch of pretentiousness in this song; a song that probably would have gone down very well a few years back.
“Bleed it Out” features Mike Chinoda’s rapping for the first time on the album. A catchy tune in it’s own right, but lyrically seems all too familiar in the chorus, which becomes tiresome towards the end of the song.

My personal favorite song of the album follows - “Shadow of the Day”. It opens with some nice percussion and bass, and Chester’s vocals are heartfelt and passionate without seeming forced. The song progresses very well, with guitars coming in beautifully around the three-minute mark. Great soft ending too, I’d recommend the song for any playlist. “What I’ve Done” is the first single released from the album, and despite being good first time around, it lacks staying power. You’ll be skipping it soon enough. “Hands Held High” is the seventh track, and is memorable, but perhaps not for the right reasons. An anti-war song is really nothing new to us, and we’re getting fairly sick of them. Mike’s righteous rapping is emotional “At times like this you pray/ but the bombs blew the mosque up yesterday”,but seems almost laughable at times, simply because it’s been done way too often. An ironic military drum beat is a nice touch, but overall not a great song.

What follows is the heaviest song on the album “No More Sorrow”. There’s a good rhythm and beat, will definitely keep the old Linkin Park fans happy. Next up is “Valentine’s Day”. You see the title, then hear the first line “My insides turn to ash”, and it doesn’t get any better from there. And guys, would it kill you to fade out a song or two? Every heavy song seems to end so suddenly, mix it up a bit. Another mellow song “In Between” has Mike singing, and it was certainly interesting to hear him doing vocals that weren’t rapped. He pulls it off well, and the vocals/backing vocals duo combine very well in this one. The final two tracks of the album don’t really add anything to it, they’re bearable, but not that enjoyable. Quite bland.

Overall, for the Linkin Park fans out there, do buy the album. It’s got some of the old LP you know and love, but beware of the risk of being put off by their new style. Many of you will love it, many will hate it, and some just won’t know what to think. The band really is trying to take a new direction, but turn out as just being overwhelmingly average. Five stars out of ten.
